Pattern Essence is often associated with the Technocracy. Because the Technocracy was portrayed as a villain in early editions (and, to a degree, in every edition) this has caused the Pattern Essence to be misunderstood. When Mage started the Technocracy were not meant to portray the purest expression of the Pattern Essence. They represented Pattern gone wrong or pursued to excess. Pattern is not about keeping things the same but about building something that is orderly & durable.
